Internal medicine is a field of medicine where doctors use their clinical judgment and scientific knowledge to identify and treat a wide range of illnesses and health issues in adults. Internists or general internists are medical professionals who specialize in internal medicine. Internists are distinct from general practitioners and family physicians, despite the fact that they are all primary care physicians and that the phrases are sometimes used synonymously. One of the main distinctions is that family practitioners treat both children and adults while internists only treat adults.Heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and lung illness are just a few examples of the conditions that are studied, diagnosed, and treated in internal medicine. Internal medicine professionals frequently treat patients with multisystem, chronic, and complex illnesses. Internal medicine residents provide care for hospitalized patients for at least a year, including at least three months in intensive/critical care units. They receive at least a year of hospital-based training, as well as additional exposure to in-patient subspecialties like gastrointestinal, hematology-oncology, and cardiology.
